Tips to Travel in Nepal
At Nirvana Journeys we want your journey through Nepal to be as smooth, enjoyable, and enriching as possible. Here are some essential tips to help you prepare for an unforgettable adventure.
Best Time for Traveling in Nepal
- The pre-monsoon (March to April/May) and post-monsoon (September to November/early December) periods offer the best weather for trekking with clear skies and pleasant temperatures.
- Spring (March-April) is particularly beautiful with rhododendrons in bloom.
Winter (December-February) can be cold, especially at night in higher altitudes, but offers clear views and fewer crowds.
Monsoon (June-August) brings heavy rain and potential landslides, making travel challenging, especially for trekking.
Currency & Payments
The local currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR).
While credit cards are accepted in larger hotels, restaurants, and shops in major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, cash is king, especially in rural areas and for smaller purchases.
ATMs are available in cities but can be scarce in remote regions; it’s wise to carry sufficient cash.
Money exchange counters are readily available in tourist hubs like Thamel. Avoid carrying INR 500 and 2000 notes, as they are not accepted.
Keep smaller denominations (Rs 20, 50, 100) for daily expenses.
Cultural Etiquette
Greet locals with a warm “Namaste” (palms together, slight bow).
Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or in rural areas (cover shoulders and knees).
Remove your shoes before entering temples, monasteries, and Nepali homes.
Walk around stupas, chortens, and prayer wheels clockwise.
Use your right hand when giving or receiving items, or when eating. The left hand is considered unclean.
Avoid touching people’s heads (considered sacred) or pointing your feet at people or religious objects (considered disrespectful).
Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.
Visa Information
Visa & Entry
Most nationalities can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) or at various land border crossings.
Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned entry date and has at least one blank page for the visa.
Carry two recent passport-sized photos and cash (preferably USD) for visa fees.
For specific country requirements or to apply in advance, check the official Nepal Department of Immigration website.
If trekking, you’ll also need a TIMS card and potentially Restricted Area Permits, which can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
Health & Safety
- Consult your doctor about recommended vaccinations (e.g., Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid, Tetanus, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies) well before your trip.
Altitude sickness is a risk when trekking above 2,500m. Acclimatize properly, hydrate, and know the symptoms.
Always drink bottled or purified water and avoid ice cubes in drinks.
Be cautious with street food; opt for well-cooked meals from reputable establishments.
Travel insurance covering emergency medical evacuation (especially helicopter rescue for trekkers) is highly recommended.
Exercise caution with personal belongings, especially in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit areas.
Road conditions can be challenging; consider hiring a private vehicle with a driver for inter-city travel for comfort and safety.
