Trip Overview
The Beautiful Bhutan Trip is primarily a cultural and scenic overland tour with significant hiking elements. While you will spend much of your time exploring ancient fortresses (Dzongs) and monasteries, the journey features two major highlights for walkers: the gentle Gangtey Nature Trail through the wide glacial valley of Phobjikha and the legendary pilgrimage hike to Tiger’s Nest (Paro Taktsang). This trip is designed for those who want to see the best of Bhutan’s “Central Valleys” while enjoying the comfort of traditional hotels.
Trip Highlights
Tiger’s Nest Monastery: Hike to Bhutan’s most iconic landmark, perched 900m above the Paro Valley.
Gangtey (Phobjikha) Valley: Explore one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in the Himalayas, the winter home of rare Black-Necked Cranes.
Punakha Dzong: Visit the “Palace of Great Happiness,” widely considered the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan.
Dochula Pass: Witness the 108 memorial chortens with a 360-degree view of the snow-capped Himalayan range.
Kathmandu Heritage: Discover UNESCO World Heritage sites including the holy Pashupatinath and the massive Boudhanath Stupa.
Top Attractions of the Trek
Buddha Dordenma (Thimphu): A 51-meter-tall golden Buddha statue overlooking the capital.
Gangtey Goempa: A 17th-century monastery sitting atop a hill in the Phobjikha Valley.
Chimi Lhakhang: The famous “Fertility Temple” in Punakha, dedicated to the Divine Madman.
Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple): An ancient religious complex offering the best sunset views in Kathmandu.
Punakha Suspension Bridge: One of the longest and most scenic suspension bridges in the country.
Best Time and Season
Spring (March to May): The best time for nature lovers. The valleys are alive with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers, and the weather is mild.
Autumn (September to November): The peak season for clear mountain views and major festivals (Tshechus). The skies are deep blue and perfect for photography.
Winter (December to February): Ideal for seeing the Black-Necked Cranes in Gangtey. Days are sunny, though nights in Gangtey can drop below freezing.
Summer (June to August): The monsoon season. While it rains, the landscapes turn a vibrant, lush green.
Trek Difficulty
This trip is rated Easy to Moderate. The driving portions are comfortable, but the hike to Tiger’s Nest (Day 8) is physically demanding due to the steep incline and altitude (3,120m). The Gangtey walk is a flat, easy nature stroll suitable for all ages.
How to Train for the Trek
You do not need to be a professional athlete, but basic fitness will enhance your experience:
Walking: Aim for 45-minute brisk walks 3 times a week.
Stair Climbing: Practice climbing stairs to prepare your legs for the 700+ steps at Tiger’s Nest.
Leg Strength: Simple squats and lunges will help with the steep descent from the monastery.
Things to Consider Before the Trek
Visa & Permits: Bhutan visas must be processed by a licensed tour operator. Nepal visas are available on arrival.
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): Your trip cost includes the mandatory daily fee that supports Bhutan’s free education and healthcare.
Dress Code: When entering Dzongs or temples, you must wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants (no shorts or hats inside).

Protection: Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat.
Accessories: A 20-30L daypack, reusable water bottle, and trekking poles for the Tiger’s Nest descent.
